Many Orange Lights Over Gateshead Tyne And Wear UK (Lanterns)

Hi, I’ve just been looking on the internet to see if anyone else saw the orange lights I saw on New Years eve, just gone, and found your site. I was at my mum’s house having a ciggie at the back door and watched at least five orange lights fly overhead. My mum lives in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. So they were visible in the Northeast of England too.

I eventually pointed one out to my mum, having gone back inside I didn’t tell anyone as they may think I was just exaggerating, but having seen in the New Year, going back outside to my dad’s car to be taken home, the lights were still going overhead, so there must have been a steady stream of them whilst I was otherwise occupied.

Being driven home they were still coming towards the same direction, making a total of 6 that I did see. I tried taking a photo on my phone, but all I got was the black sky. They were following one another at a steady speed, at the same height, going in the same direction. As some people have suggested Chinese lanterns, I don’t think lanterns would stay at the same height at the same time or all travel in the same direction. They were pretty bright lights too. Orange Glowing Lights Over Raunds UK (Chinese Lanterns)

Hi Brian, I came upon this site as I too saw some orange glowing lights in the sky and I wanted some information. It had just gone midnight on New Year when I had my sighting. I live in Raunds and I spied something at the corner of my eye, a light going across the sky from Kettering direction to Huntingdon direction. I watched as there were further lights, about a dozen or so in total, but I didn't think of counting.

It kind of bugged me for days and I got to thinking of things it could be, then yesterday I went into a shop and had a 'Eureka' moment. Well I'm thinking so now. For there in the shop they were selling Chinese Lanterns, I'd been thinking that this could have been my sighting all along? I've been speaking with a friend of mine in Peterborough who mentioned that she had seen many of these at night over the past few weeks.

2 Silent Red Lights Over Te Anau Southland New Zealand (Chinese Lanterns/Wish Lanterns)

Location of Sighting: Te Anau Southland New Zealand.

Shape of Objects: Luminescent circular.

Full Description of Event/Sighting: Te Anau has beautiful clear skies due to it’s remote and pristine location, we are used to seeing aircraft, particularly helicopters and light aircraft overhead. But my partner and I also saw the strange and silent red light over the town on Friday 12th November. In fact we saw two - within ten minutes of each other - following a similar trajectory across the sky.

The coloring and size of these objects confirmed for us that they could not be aircraft or satellites, they were too low, too bright and a strange circular shape. I am certain that many other citizens of the town will have seen this phenomenon but, like the previous writer and ourselves, be reluctant to give our names or details for fear of ridicule.

We have been watching the skies with mixed hope and fear for many years and this is the strangest thing we have ever seen. Again, we would very much like others to confirm what we saw so we may be in a position to 'go public'.

Two words = Sky Lantern

Friday night in Te Anau included a Divali party (it's the biggest Hindu festival and very awesome), we celebrated a week late to ensure we weren't seen to be celebrating terrorism ("Guy Fawkes" which is also celebrated locally), I couldn't get white sky lanterns and procured 10 red ones from www.trademe.co.nz

They were big red tissue paper heart editions (usually for weddings), we had possibly 10 witnesses to the launch of 4, in two lots of two during evening, we gave 5 away as presents as part of the festivities and have one left which your anonymous spotter is welcome to have (ask them to go to the Fiordland Cinema and identify themselves, or Trips and Tramps).

At night they glow and there is a chance the night watcher might have seen the cardboard burning beneath the basically paper hot air balloon before is burnt out, all organic biodegradable components of course.

We only have one local night flyer who was not in the airspace at the time of launch.

From Chinese Lanterns To Real UFOs Over Bingley UK

Time: Between 21:30 22:00 and other times.

Hi my name is (name removed), and I live in Bingley, I am a regular sky watcher and have seen many bright orange lights over the Bingley Cottingley and Cullingworth area, the last being a very elaborate lantern on the 6/8/10. I believe I also witnessed the light of the 26/7/10 and dismissed it as another lantern.

Two months ago a stream of 18 were released over the Cullingworth area, but alot of people also confuse planes coming into Yeadon airport as they turn on their landing lights, which from a distance can look orange with the pollution in the area, as they come in low.

The lantern on the 6th was let off in the Sandy Lane cricket pitch, I know this because I saw the light and stopped to watch it and as I looked two men asked what I thought it was. When I replied a lantern, they admitted to me they had just released it and it would soon flash a green light which it promptly did. They are keen modelers and let of the lanterns as a bit of a laugh on a regular basis. Usually weekends between 21:30 22:00

However I have seen lights over the area that I cannot explain. I watch on a regular basis as a pastime because of this, and one phenomena I witness on a regular basis are very small flashes of light, blue in colour small, but very intense which are visible in daylight, sometimes complimented with a tail rather like a tadpole. Do you have any idea what these could be?

I have witnessed an upright cylinder hovering in the area and an orange light that I am sure was not a lantern on another occasion. Hope this is of interest to you, and by the way the modelers are letting of lanterns with 3 chambers so they look like 3 orbs together.

Orange Glowing Spheres Newbury Berkshire UK (Photos - Chinese Lanterns)

Full Description of Event/Sighting: Last night at 10:02pm the first orange glowing sphere appeared from the southwest, travelling I would estimate faster than an airplane! It was followed by six more at one to two minute intervals. As soon as one disappeared into the cloud, another one came into sight in the southwest. Each one travelled a slightly different trajectory forming an arch and the first one disappearing to the east, the last object to the northwest. There was no noise at all.

The bright orangey red glow kept a perfect flight course, with no wavering whatsoever. All seven at a height, I would say a little higher than an approaching airplane.

Orange Lights Over Ammanford Carmarthenshire UK (Chinese Lanterns)

Hello Brian, I have just come across your blog after putting in a search on UFOs, as I saw 2 orange lights in the sky over Ammanford (Carmarthenshire) last night - 11th Feb 2010 and wondered if anyone knew what they were. My friend rang me at about 7.30pm to say that 7 orange lights were over his house in Ammanford again (he saw them on Christmas day 2009 at around the same time and tried to video them - there were 10 then).

I live about 3 miles away on the mountain overlooking Ammanford and have an uninterrupted view. I looked outside after the phone call, and saw 2 orange lights over the town which I thought were stars - as it was a clear night, until they rose higher in the sky in a straight line and disappeared. There was no noise (and I can hear helicopters over the town quite clearly).

I then thought that they may be metallic balloons reflecting the orange street lamps over Ammanford but my friend dismissed that idea, and I'm not sure I'd be able to see balloons from that distance.
Also, I've just come across an article where a lot of people saw them last year over Ammanford during a blackout, so I suppose I'm just clutching at straws really, trying to find a rational (non alien) explanation.

They may be Chinese lanterns, as someone here has suggested, as I think it is around the start of the Chinese New Year (10th Feb ?) and I notice that you saw them on New Year's Eve and my friend saw them on Christmas Day. Perhaps someone in the area celebrates these occasions by releasing them. I hope so. Thank you for your blog - it's interesting reading.

Orange Object Looked Like A Floating Fire Seen Over Hemel Hempstead UK (Chinese Lanterns)

Full Description of Event/Sighting: I was coming back from the shop in Hemel Hempstead when my partner noticed a light in the sky. I said it was a plane, but after looking myself I could see no flashing lights, just what looked like something on fire high in the sky. It was orange and just looked like a small fire floating up high, it was not going particularly fast and just went at a steady pace in a straight line, it definitely was not a shooting star either.

We watched for about 30 seconds until it disappeared into the cloud. After about another minute, we saw another one, same speed and direction only this time I could clearly see what appeared to be something falling from it, like drips of fire were coming from it, there were about five or six of these drips, it was quite unnerving as it went over head. It appeared to be boomerang shaped and there was no noise at any time during watching these objects. I called my brother who is west London (Ealing) he asked if I saw an orange shooting star before, I had even said anything so I am assuming he saw the same thing. What are they?

Chinese Lanterns Observed Over Sheffiled Chesterfield UK

Time: Before midnight and afterwards.

Wish someone would look into these lights. I've seen them on two occasions, my mum witnessed them New Years eve too. I've seen other reports, numerous ones on the net for Sheffiled Chesterfield and over various places witnessing them. I'd put it down to Chinese lanterns, but they all seem to follow the same line and too far apart to be tied together, well some of them are. Tuesday night I saw over 12. I've heard one report of over 50. I saw two just before New Years and my mum saw up to a dozen on New Years eve.

Any idea what these lights are? I felt I could hear an humming sound, like a dull bi-plane, but not enough noise for what you would expect to come from 12 of them. Something weird is going on and I've seen a video on Youtube of them over Chesterfield and Newcastle looking exactly like what I saw, but more sporadic in the sky. The ones I saw apart from about 3 of them, seemed to follow the same line in the sky.

Hope this helps with other reports you been having on these lights, but I can best explain them looking like street lights following each other in the sky.

New Years Eve Orange Light Sightings From Around The World - Chinese Lanterns

The Vike Factor posted 194 reported sightings, I received just under a total of 300 reports on orange lights in the night sky. Most of the sightings were in the U.K., others were in the United States and some in Ontario Canada. Also the majority of the lights were seen on New Years Eve and the sighting reports flew in.

The majority of the orange light sightings, some red also reported were Chinese Lanterns. Some I have no idea as to what they were. One report of a Black Triangle over the UK on December 31, 2009, but the rest of the reports, orange lights which turned out to be Chinese Lanterns.

Red Lights Over Sandbach Cheshire UK - Chinese Lanterns

Can't seem to comment on you're blog, but thought I'd email you to say we live in Sandbach Cheshire and saw loads of these red lights at about 12.30am, they just kept on coming. We saw two at first and thought they were planes following the same path, then the one at the rear got closer to the first one, then other lights just kept coming, very strange.

Some people have suggested Chinese lanterns, not so sure as they were moving too fast. Thanks.

Red/Orange Balls Of Light Over Shropshire UK - Chinese Lanterns

Any reports of sightings at midnight 31 December. Shropshire midnight.

I was looking out of my window of fireworks from great hay golf club as we are directly opposite the hotel with the gorge and river between us both on top of hill. Hotel Madeley side. We are Broseley side near Woodbridge pub. We saw 3 red/orange balls of light and thought were fireworks until they kept coming towards the house at constant speed and constant distance. Height was difficult to say, but if 2000 feet high.

The speed would be approx: 300 mph and obviously rising apportionally with height. Suddenly lead light seemed to rise vertically and disappear into the stars or did the light contract and glow dim to zero ? I looked back for other 2 balls, they too had gone. Two minutes later, 6 further balls rolled across the sky from same direction northeast same speed and constant distant, but last three in triangle formation. Unable to see if the 6 disappeared the same as first three as they went behind tress and high ground as viewed from different angle.

Assume many reports as there were many firework displays.

Orange Light Over East Fife Scotland UK - Chinese Lanterns

Hi, I live in East Fife, Scotland beside the River Forth on the opposite side to the City of Edinburgh. Not long after midnight New Years Eve into New Years Day we saw a single large burning orange object in the sky moving at about the speed of a plane. It moved across the River towards Edinburgh in a straight line before turning sharply to the right. It then moved off and disappeared in the distance. I have never seen anything like this. At first I thought it must be a plane on fire but it obviously was not. It was a clear night and we live right on the coast so had an unobstructed view. There were 2 of us that saw the object.

Orange Lights Over Stoke-On-Trent UK - Chinese Lanterns

Hi there, I don't know if anyone else saw the orange lights over Stoke-On-Trent at just after midnight 31 Dec/1 Jan 2010. Either 19 or 20 over a 15 minute period after the fireworks settled down. Travelling north to south very fast at intervals, no vapour trail, no noise, no apparent formation. Any clues as I am not a believer in UFO's.

Chinese Lanterns Observed Over Annan Scotland UK

Hi, I am from Annan in Scotland and we saw about 5 or 6 bright orange moving lights in the sky at 10 past midnight. My girlfriends sister took a video of one of the lights on her phone. This isn't the first time that we have experienced what appears to be a paranormal event. These lights definitely weren't airplanes as they were too close together and flying too low. The lights also appeared to be heading south. Five of us witnessed this last night. Have you had any other reports of sightings?

Multiple Glowing Orange And Red Lights Over Chippenham Wiltshire UK - Chinese Lanterns

Full Description of Event/Sighting: Hi, Happy New Year. My daughter and I were enjoying the local fireworks from the comfort of our home when around 12:15am, a large number of orange lights entered the sky. Initially I paid no attention, as I assumed they were ordinary commercial aircraft but, after a dozen or so had passed over in quick succession, I looked much more closely. What happened over the next 45 mins was quite remarkable - around 50 or so glowing orange and red 'shapes' continued to appear from the North and headed on the same flight path in a southerly direction.

Each of them seemed to travel much quicker than the usual aircraft we're used to seeing in Wiltshire, and they made no sound whatsoever. It was a very clear night, with little cloud cover, which made it all the more amazing when two completely disappeared in front of us. I managed to get some photos and video footage but nothing which can really fully explain what it was we saw. Whatever it was that happened, it was quite amazing. Any suggestions?

Brian, thanks for your reply. The time was shortly after midnight on New Years eve. Funny thing there is a banking advert on television presently (not sure if it is sky or terrestrial) which features these Chinese lanterns. Looks like these are a strong candidate for the answer. Regards.

Orange Lights - Chinese Lanterns Flew From Burtonwood, Warrington UK

Dear Vike Factor:

Just to let you know we set off 10 flying Chinese lanterns that flew from Burtonwood, Warrington out towards Widnes/Cheshire and presumably on to Ellesmere Port. We let 4 go around 10pm ish, then another 1 around 11.30 following by another one at 11.35 and then the final 4 at 11.55. They have a flight duration of 20 minutes and it was windy so they would have progressed quite quickly. I also think that other people were letting them off too as they were widely available from the pound shops!

My friend let 4 off again from Burtonwood at 8.00pm! Hope this explains it, the reason I googled UFO sightings was because the very first time I saw one I too thought it was a UFO, but later learned it was a Chinese Lantern which obviously get used on New Years eve! Hope this helps explain a possible reason for the sightings, though nothing is ever 100% and the sightings may genuinely have been UFO sightings – who knows? Regards.

Orange Lights Are Chinese Lanterns Over Derbyshire‏ UK

Hi, the large orange lights I saw in the sky on early New Year's Day have been identified in this area as Chinese Lanterns, many of which were released here in the Midlands. I can find out more details if you would like, but they were most likely these lanterns. My source says he was at the release of them and they were all bright orange balls of light. Regards.

Campbelltown, New South Wales Witness Believes They Observed Lanterns

Time: Between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Shape of objects: The object was perfectly round in shape.
Weather Conditions: Clear sky with no clouds, excellent weather conditions.

Description: My husband and I were sitting out in our back yard to view the new years fire works display that takes place at midnight from Koshigaye park Campbelltown. Whilst sitting I could not help but to gaze into the sky as conditions were so clear that I could observe all the stars, suddenly almost out of no where I noticed this completely round in shape bright light. I called to my husband who said to me the most obvious, it's a plane, I replied oh no way, this object was one solid mass of light with no obvious flashing lights of a plane. I was so convinced it was not of this world hence my eyes did not leave it for a second.

As myself and my husband followed the object it just disappeared into nothingness, it was the most crazy thing. I sat bewildered, it just vanished into thin air.
This was by all accounts something that could not be identified, there was in my opinion no logical explanation for this object. As I stated this object was in no absolute way an Aircraft.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, well after viewing some video footage and reading about the UFO lanterns it is probable that what I seen that night was a Lantern.

I cant be 100% certain but it is a logical explanation.
